Artis Beal, age 89, of Texas City passed away Monday, July 8, 2013 at Gulf Health Care Center in Texas City.

Artis was born May 7, 1924 in Mangham, Louisiana to Grandville and Eliza Blount Beal.

He leaves to celebrate his life and memory, the love of his life for 65 years, Selma McDaniel Beal and his children: Loretta Beal Rivers (Wharton) of Friendswood, TX, John McDaniel (Evelyn) of League City, TX, James Beal (Minnie) of Pearland, TX, Kenneth Beal of Texas City, TX , five grandchildren, Derrick Rivers (Cameryn), Reginald Rivers (Brooke), Da Netta Beal, James Beal, II, Carmen Theus; seven great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and special friends, Robert and Bertha Nelson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Grandville and Eliza Beal, his son, Paul Ray Beal and six siblings: Olivia, Rosetta, Willie Mae, Bertha, Beatrice and Allen.

Artis attended Delhi High School before serving in the United States Army for two years during World War II. After discharge from the Army, he graduated from Monroe Tailoring School and completed clerical training at Roosevelt Business School, also in Monroe, Louisiana.

He moved to Texas City in 1951 in search of better employment opportunities. Initially, he worked in the construction industry and later was hired by Monsanto in Texas City. He retired as an operator in 1986, after 31 years with the company. Additionally, he worked part-time as the custodian at First Christian Church in Texas City for 21 years.

Artis and Selma moved to Delhi, LA to enjoy retirement and traveling around the country. Missing friends and family, they returned to Texas City in 2006 and reunited with their church home, Greater Bell Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Texas City.

Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 13, 2013 at Greater Bell Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 5917 Carver, Street in Texas City, with Pastor Jerry B. Lee, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Park East Cemetery in Webster, TX. Visitation will be held from 4:00-8:00 p.m., Friday, July 12, 2013 at Mainland Funeral Home in LaMarque and from 1:00-2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at Greater Bell Zion Missionary Baptist Church.

The family thanks the very professional and caring staff of the Hospice Care Team, Gamble’s Personal Touch Care Home and Gulf Health Care Center. We also deeply appreciate the loving care of Bertha Nelson, Kathy Rivers and Diana Akbar.
